Sinner reigns supreme at Flushing Meadows─── MORGAN PIEK 08:38 Mon, 09 Sep 2024
“It was different because I had more pressure than in Australia. I’m happy with how I handled this one and I’m just excited to have this trophy with me.”
The world number one, Jannik Sinner of Italy, has won his second Grand Slam title for 2024.
On Sunday, Sinner needed just over 2 and a quarter hours on court to claim a straight-sets win against Taylor Fritz to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows for the first time.
While Sinner (23) was out-served in the game by the 12th-seeded American, he won the final with a relatively comfortable 6-3, 6-4 and 7-5 victory. Sinner said winning in New York was a lot harder than winning the Australian Open in January.
“Here it was difficult, also because the pre-tournament circumstances were not easy,” said Sinner.
“I felt like I've grown match by match – my confidence level went higher and higher at some point.

In January, Sinner won his first Grand Slam title by beating Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3 to win the men’s singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne. He also managed to reach the semi-finals of the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris.
Meanwhile, on Saturday Aryna Sabalenka beat Jessica Pegula 7-5 and 7-5 to win the women’s singles.
