Red card for Danny Jordaan─── MORGAN PIEK 14:39 Wed, 13 Nov 2024
The President of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordaan, another executive, and a businessman, were arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday.
Jordaan as well as SAFA’s CFO Gronie Hluyo, and the businessman Trevor Neethling were arrested by the Hawks and charged with fraud and corruption to the tune of R1.3 million.
The trio appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday to face charges.
Jordaan was arrested at this home on Wednesday morning and he didn’t hand himself over. The 73-year-old did approach the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg for an interdict to stop his arrest, and this case was set to be heard on Thursday, however, it may now be struck from the roll.
‘Electronic devices as well as files were seized and used to build their case’
In March this year, SAFA House in Johannesburg was raided, and electronic devices as well as files were seized and used to build their case.
The trio were alleged to have used money from the sport’s governing body for personal gain.
On Wednesday morning the Hawks confirmed that a warrant for the arrest was issued and executed for Jordaan, Hluyo, and Neethling.
‘The three accused have been charged with seven counts’
“Warrants have been issued for the arrest of two prominent South African Football Association’s executive officers aged 73 and 55 together with a businessman were executed this morning, 13 November following an intensive investigation by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation based in Johannesburg into allegations of R1.3 million fraud and theft.”
The three accused have been charged with seven counts, including fraud, theft, conspiracy to commit fraud, and theft. All three men were each granted bail of R20 000 and will be back in court on 5 December.
