Mabasa inches closer to Buccaneers legend status─── MORGAN PIEK 14:35 Fri, 31 Jan 2025
The 28-year-old Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is inching closer to becoming a Buccaneers legend.
The former Bloemfontein Celtic marksman is just 13 goals away from breaking the club record of Benedict Vilakazi, who found the back of the net 52 times.
The Bloemfontein born-and-bred forward is on 40 goals for the Sea Robbers already, and he will be fancied to add to that tally against Kaizer Chiefs in tomorrow’s big Soweto Derby.

Mabasa, who has played for Bafana Bafana just six times, said he wants to break Vilakazi’s record and it’s something he will be able to do by the end of the 2024/245 season.
“It’s not something that I’ve looked at personally, you know, but the guys have motivated me and encouraged me to go through with this and to keep focused on it,” said Mabasa who attended Grey College in Bloemfontein.
“I’m just trying to bury every chance that comes my way, you know so that I can see that record.

“They believe that I'm one of the best strikers this country has ever seen and they support me quite a lot.
“So yeah, it's hopefully something that I want to achieve come into this season.”
Saturday’s big Soweto Derby between the Buccaneers and Amakhosi at Soccer City kicks off at 15:30.
