The seven-time back-to-back Premier Soccer League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, have confirmed the appointment of another assistant coach ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The Brazilians have added the young French coach, Romain Folz, to their technical team.

He has previously coached in South Africa where he was in charge of AmaZulu as well as Marumo Gallants, although his spells at these clubs were short-lived.

‘They are enjoying a preseason’

Folz will be an assistant of the first team where he will work alongside Manqoba Mngqithi, Steve Komphela, Wendell Robinson and Kennedy Mweene. He linked up with the team in Austria where they are enjoying a preseason before getting back down to business in August.

On Tuesday, Sundowns confirmed the appointment of the new assistant coach.

“Mamelodi Sundowns has appointed Romain Folz as an assistant coach in the first team and joins Manqoba Mngqithi, Steve Komphela, Wendell Robinson and Kennedy Mweene in the Technical Department. 

Folz joins the 2023/24 PSL Champions from FIFA’s High-Performance Department where he worked on the development of football.

“Folz joins the 2023/24 PSL Champions from FIFA’s High-Performance Department where he worked on the development of football. Folz, who holds a UEFA Pro License, has previously worked in South Africa and across Africa in Guinea, Botswana, and Ghana. 

“Mamelodi Sundowns players and technical team have warmly received Folz into the camp in Austria where they are on a preseason camp. 

“The club will play more competitive matches in the next few days as part of the ongoing preseason preparations.”

Sundowns are yet to name Rhulani Mokwena’s successor as head coach, but it is believed that this could go to Mngqithi.
