“I know that my role is very important on the field – I have to lead by example. I always want to be a good example to the young ones. I always want to be a good example to the young ones.”

The new Bafana Bafana captain, Themba Zwane, will take a different approach to the leadership role during the two African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.

The injured Ronwen Williams is very vocal on the field from the last line of defence, while as an attacking midfielder, Zwane, prefers to take a quieter approach.

At 35, the Mamelodi Sundowns star is the most senior player in the squad, and he said actions speak louder than words.

“I would like to thank the coach for the opportunity he has given me – I promise that I will do my best,” said the seasoned Zwane. “I know for sure that I don’t like to talk a lot.

“But I know that my role is very important on the field – I have to lead by example. I always want to be a good example to the young ones. I need to show that on the field and try to improve with each and every game.”

The coach, Hugo Broos, in turn, said he believes that Zwane is the right man for the job as he has respect for every single individual in the squad as players and management.

“I decided to name Themba Zwane as the captain because he has the respect of everyone in the group and even the technical staff,” said the Belgian coach.

“He is the right man and at the right place. I hope that he can give us victories and lead by example. With Ronwen the last three years, we have been very successful.

“I hope Themba can also give us the needed victory in the upcoming games. These are qualifiers, and it’s important that you start well and you aren’t behind. Halfway you put the pressure on your opponents in the group.”

On Friday at 18:00, Bafana and Uganda will go head-to-head at the Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg.
