“I faced this club many times and it was always extremely difficult. Surely you know me very well by now as one of your former opponents. I have always admired and loved how you encourage and support this incredible team.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Rhulani Mokwena, has wasted no time in landing a job at a top African club.

This comes a week after Mokwena and the seven-time back-to-back Premier Soccer League champions parted ways.

Mokwena, who led the Brazilians to back-to-back PSL titles has been named as the new head coach of the Moroccan giants, Wydad AC.

The three-times CAF Champions League winners confirmed the appointment of the 37-year-old on a three-year contract.

Mokwena said Wydad has always been a club has a lot respect for and looks forward to a new chapter with the African giants.

“Wydad best club in Morocco and one of the biggest on the continent,” said Mokwena.

“I faced this club many times and it was always extremely difficult. Surely you know me very well by now as one of your former opponents. I have always admired and loved how you encourage and support this incredible team.

“Today I'm proud to announce that I am officially a part of your family and together we will write a new history for this great and extremely powerful club.”

Just days after Mokwena’s departure, the former Bafana Bafana captain, Steve Komphela’s return as a senior coach was announced by Downs, while last month Mokwena was named as the PSL’s Coach of the Year for 2023/24.
