The Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, has named her preliminary squad for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia in New Zealand.

The former Banyana captain, Ellis, named a 36-member squad and they will go into camp on 12 June in Johannesburg.

The team was however dealt a massive blow with the highly experienced former captain Janine van Wyk withdrawing due to an injury.

With 180 caps to her name, Van Wyk is South Africa's most experienced player by a long-shot and her absence will be a definite blow.

Van Wyk confirmed that she withdrew from the squad after sustaining in an injury and it’s not in the teams best interests to have her being involved.

“I have sustained an injury that I personally feel would impact my chances of performing at the highest level that is required to make the World Cup squad,” said the Banyana Banyana legend.

“I have to turn down the call-up with a heavy heart, but also knowing that I am doing what is best for the team.”

South Africa is in Group G with Argentina, Italy and Sweden for the World Cup that kicks off on 20 July.
