The pride of the nation, Banyana Banyana, arrived back in South Africa on Tuesday morning following their heroics at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Banyana were greeted by thousands of excited fans at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.
The national women’s football team beat the host, Morocco, 2-1 in the final on the weekend to lift the trophy for the first time in their sixth attempt.
Upon their arrival, the Minister of Arts, Sport and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, presented the team with a cheque of R5.8 million. This has increased the teams’ bonuses to R23 million, which will be shared equally.
The South Africa Football Association (CAF) contributed R9.2 million to the kitty, while the Confederation of African Football paid R8.4 million.
They have become the first South African football team to win a major international title since the men, Bafana Bafana, won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
Next up for the champions of Africa will be to start preparing for the 2023 FIFA Women’s Football World Cup that will be staged in Australia and New Zealand.
