Unforgiving heavy rain continue to batter the province with more areas hit by landslides and overflowing rivers. The South African Weather Services predicts further widespread flooding to continue on Tuesday.

At least 20 people have died in KwaZulu-Natal and two are still missing, with the death toll from the floods expected to rise.

An Orange Level 8 weather warning has been issued by the South African Weather Services that predicts further widespread flooding to continue on Tuesday 12 April.

CoGTA KZN has advised residents to stay home and have deployed SANDF to assist with evacuation efforts.

Disaster management teams are still collating the extent of the damage so far.

People in areas that have experienced mudslides, flooding, and structural collapses of buildings and roads are being evacuated.

Heavy rains have affected power lines in many municipalities with technical teams working around the clock to restore power.

Inclement weather conditions are expected to continue on Tuesday and residents in low-lying areas are urged to seek shelter on higher ground.

People have taken to social media to share the destruction caused by the floods with several homes washed away.

Several roads have also been washed away and cars are submerged on highways. Reports of airport containers and tankers being swept into the Umgeni river have been shared.

The last time the KZN region experienced floods of this nature was in 2017 when several low-lying areas were destroyed in severe flooding.
