Van Niekerk into 400m final at World Champs─── MORGAN PIEK 10:24 Wed, 23 Aug 2023
The world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, snuck into the final of the 400m for men at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
On Tuesday night the former Free State sprinter and Olympic champion survived a scare by finishing third in the first semi-final in a time of 44.65 sec behind Antonio Watson of Jamaica and Vernon Norwood of the USA.
This was however enough for Van Niekerk to sneak into the semi-final with 7th fastest time and he will run in lane two in the final.
Following his race Van Niekerk expressed his disappointment, and targets a better performance in the final.
“I am disappointed - let's see what I will be able to do another day,” said Van Niekerk.
“I have time to recover, regroup and then I will come back to do my best in the final. Hopefully I will able to win a medal.”
The 400m final for men will take place on Thursday night at 21:35.
