Comrades Marathon produces two first-time winners─── MORGAN PIEK 08:35 Mon, 29 Aug 2022
The 2022 Comrades Marathon that took place on Sunday produced two first-time winners. The iconic ultra-marathon was run for the first time since 2019 as the global pandemic made it impossible for it to have taken place in recent times.
The men's down-run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban was won by Tete Dijana of the North-West in a time of 5:30:38 seconds for his maiden win.
The defending champion, Edward Mothibi, ran in at 5:33:46, while Dan Moselakwe completed the podium with 5:36:25.
The 8th placed Solly Manduwa of Malawi was the only non-South African top10 finisher in the men's race.
Dijana said winning the iconic ultra-marathon has changed his life.
“I feel very happy to have won the race, because it was not an easy race as you know,” said the security guard at the Mafikeng campus of the North-West University.
“Having two defending champions in the bunch made for it not to be an easy one.
“The win means a lot because it has changed my life. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It has really changed my life.”
Alexandra Morozova of Russia won the women's race in 6:17:48, while Poland's Dominika Stelmach ran second in 6:25:09 and South Africa's Adele Broodryk of the North West finished third in 6:26:35 as the first local runner.
