Koi activist welcomes proposed PE Airport name change─── 07:41 Sat, 02 Jun 2018
Four airports could soon be contributing to the preservation of the country's rich heritage.
Koi activist and member of the Eastern Cape provincial legislature Christian Martin has welcomed the announcement by Airports Company South Africa that it's seeking public comment and proposals by next week Wednesday for the renaming of four national and international airports in South Africa.
Cape Town International Airport, East London Airport, Port Elizabeth International Airport and Kimberley Airport are subject to renaming as part of government's Transformation of Heritage Landscape programme.
Bisho-based MPL Martin, who is also the Chairperson of Social Development in the Eastern Cape, says he'd like to see Port Elizabeth International Airport renamed after David Stuurman - one of the early leaders of the Koi San people in the Province.
Martin says he accepts that many people would like the airport renamed Nelson Mandela International Airport, but feels Madiba would not mind his proposal - given that his DNA showed he was also a decendant of the Koi people.
Proposals and comments may be sent by e-mail to Corporate.Affairs@airports.co.za or hand-delivered to the Airports Company South Africa office at the nearest airport by close of business on Wednesday the 6th of June.
