Nearly 8 000 fewer cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 15:32 Fri, 03 Mar 2017
Bloemfontein - Nearly 8 000 fewer cases were reported in South Africa for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm during the period April to December 2016.
This is according to crime statistics released by Police Minister, Nathi Nhleko, and acting Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane this morning.
Nhleko and Phahlane presented the latest crime statistics to the Portfolio Committee on Police in Parliament.
A total of 129 454 cases were recorded during the period of April to December 2016, compared to 137 200 during the previous three quarters. This showed a significant decline of 5.6%.
No province showed an increase in this category with the Free State recording 8 871 cases, showing the biggest decline of 10.2% compared to 9 880 in 2015/16.

Northern Cape, Gauteng and North West followed the Free State with a decline of 8.1%, 6.7% and 6.2% respectively. Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm forms part of the contact crimes, according to the police.

“Contact crimes refer to those crimes in which the victims themselves are the targets of violence or property is targeted and the victims in the vicinity during the commission of the crime are subjected to threats of violence or the use of such violence,” police said in the report.
