Community of #Koffiefontein intimidated─── 09:42 Mon, 12 Nov 2018
Protests have flared up again in the Free State town of Koffiefontein, with a resident telling OFM News roads are being closed and people are being intimidated.
The woman, who chooses to remain anonymous, says she was threatened with violence when driving to collect employees on Monday morning. OFM News also received photographs of people who gathered at the soccer stadium this morning before blocking roads and burning tires. The embattled town has seen ongoing protests, leaving schools closed and matric exams being influenced.
OFM News reported last month that hundreds of Grade 12 learners in the volatile Koffiefontein had been moved to places of safety to avert any disruption of the National Senior Certificate Examinations. Since protests started in the area a couple of months ago, members of the Public Order Policing unit have monitored the situation, with police in the area on high alert.
It is believed the residents first took to the streets to protest about issues, including job creation. There have also been calls for the mayor to step down.
A police spokesperson in the province told OFM News the situation is calm, but that further inquiries will be made.
