‘Barking mad’ economy putting strain on SPCA─── 07:05 Thu, 28 Jul 2022
The Welkom Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says the struggling economy is putting strain on its ability to care for animals.
Chairperson Dulcie Harris says the rise in the cost of living also has an impact on animals. It is appealing for financial support from animal lovers.
“The economy has a huge impact on the SPCA. People just don’t adopt because dogs look cute, you have to make sure that you are able to provide everything for the dog, so our adoption rate has dropped.”
Harris says while the NSPCA’s expenses keep rising, the funding they receive remains stagnant.
“We are struggling with food for the animals, cleaning equipment for the stalls, even petrol is way too much.
“People are really feeling the crunch, the number of sponsors have dropped while the prices are up, funding is not inflating so we find ourselves in a bit of a pickle, battling to stay afloat.”
