A 54-year-old man was shot three times in the chest and two times in his left arm during an alleged hijacking in Welkom.
This is according to police spokesperson in the Free State, Steven Thakeng, who said the man was sitting inside his car in the Commando Shopping Centre's parking lot when two men fatally shot him, pulled him out of his vehicle, and drove off.
Paramedics of emergency medical services declared the man, whom police have identified as Shai Mikia Mohapi, dead on the scene.
Mohapi's vehicle was found abandoned at Shaft 2 at the President Steyn mine, also in Welkom.
"A case of murder and hijacking was registered for further investigation and a manhunt has been launched instantly," Thakeng said.
Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Captain Pieter du Plessis of Welkom SAPS' Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit. Du Plessis can be contacted at 079-884-2179.
