Emergency hotline flatlines | News Article

The emergency hotline 10111 is experiencing problems and callers in distress might just be stranded. OFM News tried to phone the helpline after receiving a tip-off that the line is not working.

Calling the number from a landline diverts your call to Vodacom’s 112 emergency centre instead. The call only reaches the police when the emergency number is dialled from a cell phone.

Police spokesperson, Lorraine Earle, confirmed the line is currently experiencing technical problems. She said the police will be investigating the matter. Earle says members of the public, who need emergency assistance, can in the meantime call their nearest police station instead.

During the investigation, OFM News got to speak to an employee of Vodacom who indicated that the 10111 emergency number does not exist anymore. He said the cell phone network giant has now taken over the emergency line.

In the meantime, OFM News contacted Vodacom's official spokesperson, Byron Kennedy, who said this information is news to him and that he will respond soon.
