The Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club has categorically distanced itself from the raid that was conducted at a building in Elizabeth Street on Thursday.

This comes after the police in Bloemfontein confiscated a large consignment of suspected stolen beer and soft drinks set to be worth R500 000 at an empty office apartment in the same building, in which the Celtic Football Club's Headquarters was situated previously. It is believed that the goods were illegally stored and destined for illegal miners, known as zama-zamas in Welkom. Bloemfontein Celtic spokesperson, Sello Nduna, says allegations that the club was somehow involved in the raid is malicious and a detriment to the club’s brand. He says the club has been based in Bayswater for the past eight years or so.

“The building that was raided yesterday, is a building that we used to occupy. Although our supporters’ office is still based there, there is also other departments and other companies that currently occupy the building. We do not know what was found there, but it is not associated with Bloemfontein Celtic,” says Nduna.

The police say no arrests have been made. A case of the possession of suspected stolen property has been opened.

Police spokesperson, Chaka Marope, appeals to anyone with information to contact their nearest police station.
