Prisoner allegedly strangled to death at Goedemoed Prison─── MARK STEENBOK 15:45 Tue, 16 May 2017
Bloemfontein - The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that they, together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), are investigating an incident at the Goedemoed Prison which resulted in the death of an inmate.
The regional spokesperson for the department, Puleng Mokhoane, says a fight broke out between two prisoners at about 18:25 in a cell of mentally ill offenders in the hospital section of the prison.
She says both offenders involved in the fight were mentally ill and were receiving treatment at the time. Mokhoane says it is alleged that the one prisoner strangled the other. The prisoner, whose name cannot be revealed until the next of kin has been informed, was pronounced dead by a medical doctor at about 21:00.
The cause of death will also be known once an autopsy has been performed. Mokhoane says an internal investigation is currently under way.
