Material handling mishap kills worker at Harmony Gold’s Joel mine─── 11:09 Tue, 19 Jul 2016
Theunissen - Harmony Gold Mining on Tuesday said a worker at the mine had died after a material handling accident at its Joel mine in the Free State, near the town of Theunissen.
"Harmony regrets to advise that a colleague succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday afternoon, following a material handling accident on Friday morning at Joel mine in the Free State province," Harmony said in a statement.
Mining is conducted at a depth of 1,452 metres at Joel plant which processes ore.
There were no fatalities at the plant during the 2015 financial year.
But Harmony has been plagued by fatalities of late. One mine worker was fatally injured last month in an underground rail bound related incident at Phakisa mine, near Welkom in the Free State province.
Another mine worker died after a fall of ground at Harmony’s Kusasalethu mine, near Carletonville in April.
A gold miner was killed in an accident at Harmony’s Target mine in December in Welkom following a fall of ground accident.
Harmony’s management expressed condolences to the members of the deceased’s family and said investigations into the accident were underway.
