Stilfontein - The Matlosana Municipality are aware of the sewerage problem in Stilfontein in the North West which has left residences without proper sanitation.

Several shacks in the Khuma community has no toilets. Outside toilets were built by the municipality six years ago but were never connected to any sewage disposal system. This has left families in the community to use and share small black plastic buckets.

Municipality spokesperson, Ntswaki Makgetha, says R31 million has already been approved for a sewerage upgrade project which is running in the Khuma extension.

The Khuma North East Sewerage Network is intended to address the insufficient capacity of the sewer pipes of houses that were handed over by the mine. Netswaki says a senior official was reprimanded among others for the toilets that were not connected to any sewerage disposal system.

Makgetha says the council is in the process of purchasing the land for a new township establishment to eradicate squatter camps at open spaces and other stands earmarked for institutions. She further says the project is running to address the old and redundant infrastructure at the housing units which were belonging to the mine.

Engagements with local land owners are also underway for the municipality to procure the portions of land to allow for Khuma Extension Township Establishment to eradicate the illegal squatters.
