Virginia - Convicted Welkom graveyard murderer, Maartens van der Merwe, says he wish he'd never been born.
Van der Merwe spoke to a forensic psychiatrist from the University of the Free State, Professor Dap Louw, before his hearing in the Virginia circuit court this morning.
Louw was requested by the state to see Van der Merwe today in order to form an opinion of the murderer's psychological state ahead of his sentencing on Friday.
An emotional Van der Merwe told Louw that he knows he deserves death, and that he wishes he could go to heaven so that he can apologise to his victim, Michael van Eck.
Louw says he's never before seen such raw emotion from a hard-core murderer. He asked the court to hand Van der Merwe a lengthy jail term.
Van der Merwe was yesterday found guilty on charges of murdering and dismembering 23-year-old Van Eck in Welkom last year.
