The Proteas have gone 1-0 up in the two-Test series against Bangladesh following a 7-wicket win in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Proteas claimed valuable World Test Championship (WTC) points by beating the Tigers in four days, and in addition chalked up their first Test innings on the subcontinent in 10 years.

Bangladesh resumed their second innings on 283/7 on Thursday morning and with an 87-run lead with Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 87 and Nayeem Hasan on 16 being the men at the crease. Their big concern was always going to be having only three wickets in the bank.

Nasan was unable to add to his overnight score when he was trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada just three balls into day four. Taijul Islam scored seven runs before he was brilliantly caught in the slips by Tristan Stubbs off the bowling over of Wiaan Mulder.

Despite a valiant effort by Miraz, he fell short of a century when he was caught in the slips by Mulder off Rabada’s bowling on 97, as South Africa wrapped the Bangladeshi innings for 307.

Rababa, who took his 300th Test wicket on day one, finished with brilliant figures of 6/46 in 17.5 overs. This took his tally for the Test to 9/72 in 28.5 overs.

South Africa had to score 105 runs in their second innings for a first Test victory in Asia since 2014.

‘Markram, De Zorzi got South Africa off to a good start’

The captain Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi got South Africa off to a good start in the chase but it was short-lived. Taijul Islam bowled Markram out for 20 with South Africa’s score on 42 in the 10th over.

Islam then took his second wicket by having De Zorzi caught for 41.

David Beddingham managed just 120 runs before he became Islam's third victim.

Stubbs scored 30 not out to see South Africa across the line, while Ryan Rickelton was unbeaten with 1.

Speaking after the win, Markram felt it was a good win by his team in conditions that were challenging.

“A really good performance – incredibly tough for the team to put four days of good cricket together although most of the damage was done on day one.

‘The batters helped us get a great lead’

“Bowlers were great out there, and then the batters helped us get a great lead. When you get a lead like that, it’s tough for the opposition to come back. Credit to Bangladesh for making us graft yesterday, but to knock them off was a good feather in the cap.”

The Proteas’ wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne was named the player of the match for his 114 runs in South Africa’s first innings which swung the Test in favour of the visitors.

The 2nd Test will be played from 29 October to 2 November in Chattogram.
