The Proteas' interim head coach, Malibongwe Maketa, has been impressed with Gerard Coetzee thus far in the national setup.

The Proteas are in Brisbane in preparation for their three-Test series against Australia that gets underway this week.

The Proteas have a very settled pace attack with the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortjé, while the 22-year-old Coetzee of the Knights is in the Test setup for the first time.

Maketa told OFM Sport that Coetzee has impressed him and the other players.

"He is very excited and he has settled in really well," said Maketa.

"Luckily for me, I have worked with him at under-19 and here I knew that he was going to bring a lot of energy and a lot of pace and he has impressed a lot of the guys in the squad who haven't seen a lot of him.

"As a collective, we are quite excited about what he is bringing to the group. From his side, he is grasping and asking a lot of questions from all of the other bowlers.

"It's always great for me as a coach to see a young player come into the squad and be willing to learn and willing to try a few different things.

"We are quite excited for what he is bringing and he is also very excited and looking forward to the opportunity that he has been given."

The Proteas will face a Cricket Australia XI starting Friday in a four-day warm-up match at the Allan Border Oval, while the 1st Test at the Gabba will get underway on the 17th.
