Pretoria Capitals are out of the SA20 after losing by 27 runs to MI Cape Town at a sold-out Centurion on Friday night.

Capitals can now no longer qualify for the playoffs with Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings advancing to the Eliminator set to be played at Centurion on Wednesday.

Pretoria Capitals won the toss and elected to send the visitors in to bat. MI Cape Town got down to business right away with the in-form opening pair of Rassie van der Dussen (30 off 22 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (22 off 13 balls) smashing 45 in just 4.4 overs.  Once Van der Dussen and Rickelton departed, however, the stage was set for Reeza Hendricks (77 not out) and Dewald Brevis (73 not out). An unbroken 142-run partnership off 68 balls got the visitors to a solid 222/3.

Will Jacks was the most economical bowler for the Capitals but failed to take a wicket. Tom Rogers got the wicket of Rickelton, with Senuran Muthusamy catching Colin Ingram off his own bowling and Gideon Peters getting rid of Van der Dussen.

Capitals got off to a fairly strong start (39 off 22), courtesy of Will Jacks, and an excellent half-century by Will Smeed (52 off 36). Contributions by Ashton Turner (22 off 8) and Keagan Lion-Cachet (34 not out) kept their hopes alive, but disciplined bowling by MI Cape Town kept resulting in wickets and in the end, 222 was a bridge too far for the home side.

Trent Boult, Delano Potgieter and Player of the Match Brewis each took a wicket, with Corbin Bosch and Rashid Khan each taking two.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday at Newlands before MI Cape Town head to St George’s Park for their Qualifier 1 clash against Paarl Royals at St George’s Park on Tuesday.
