The Proteas captain, Dean Elgar, has lauded the character of South Africa’s latest centurions, Sarel Erwee and Kyle Verreynne, following the 198-run win over New Zealand in the second Test in Christchurch.

Erwee scored a ton in the first innings to set up South Africa’s win, while Verreynne’s 136 not out in the second innings finished the job.

Elgar said the pair showed their true colours as players when it mattered most.

“With regards to the batting we had Sarel Erwee playing in his first Test series, get a hundred and really showed what he is made of. The character that he possesses within himself and it was great to see him influence the batting unit like that.

“Kyle Verreynne has been around for some time now in the Proteas system, but he hasn't played a lot of Tests. He also has had big shoes to fill with Quinton de Kock who retired.”

The Proteas next game is on 18 March when they host Bangladesh at SuperSport Park in the 1st ODI.
