Free State Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation MEC Zanele Sifuba has urged citizens to embrace the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution while recognising the responsibilities that come with them.

Speaking to OFM News at a Human Rights Day commemoration at Winburg, Sifuba emphasised the significance of the day and the need for collective action to address social issues in the province.

“We are commemorating and celebrating Human Rights Day, remembering the tragic events of 21 March 1960, when many people lost their lives simply for standing up for their rights and dignity,” said Sifuba. “With the advent of democracy, our Constitution was established, particularly Chapter 2, the Bill of Rights, which guarantees equality, education, healthcare, dignity, and privacy for all citizens.”

He highlighted the importance of reaching communities directly, ensuring that no part of the Free State is left behind. “We have chosen Winburg as part of our effort to engage with communities firsthand. Government must be close to the people, understand their challenges, and ensure that areas like Winburg are included in the provincial budget planning.”

Sifuba also reinforced the importance of the social compact between the government and citizens, emphasising ongoing interaction to address community needs. “Human Rights Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a call to action. We cannot afford to regress to a past that disregarded human dignity and institutionalised inequality.”

Rights and responsibilities

Sifuba reminded Free State residents rights must be exercised responsibly. “The Constitution guarantees numerous rights, but they come with responsibilities. Whether it’s access to education, healthcare, or security, we must use these rights wisely and ensure they work for everyone.”

The MEC also addressed social issues, particularly gender-based violence (GBV), which remains prevalent in the province. “We must work together to protect lives, particularly those of women and children. However, we must also recognise that men can be victims too. Just last week, I attended the funeral of a man who was killed and burned by his wife. Violence in all forms must be condemned.”

Promoting arts and culture

Sifuba emphasised the role of her department in fostering cultural expression and community engagement. “Last night, I was in Thaba Nchu opening an Arts Festival where artists from different areas came together to celebrate their talents. Culture and recreation play a vital role in uniting and empowering our people.”

She also urged responsible use of social media to prevent the spread of harmful narratives that undermine human rights. “Let us not use social media to perpetuate hate and division. Instead, let’s use it to uplift one another and build a society that respects human dignity.”

As the province continues to face various socio-economic challenges, Sifuba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to engaging communities and ensuring that democracy serves all citizens. “Democracy means participation and respect for everyone. Let us protect and uphold the rights of all as we move forward.”
