North West government pays homage to fallen soldier─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:29 Wed, 19 Feb 2025

The North West provincial government has paid tribute to one of the 14 South African soldiers killed while serving on a peacekeeping mission in the eastern DRC.
Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, along with MECs and executive members of the Mahikeng Ministers Fellowship, visited the grieving family of Moreo at his home in Extension 39, Mahikeng, on Tuesday (18/2).
L/Bdr Itumeleng Moreo (36) was part of a contingent of South African peacekeepers who lost their lives during a mission to promote peace and stability in Africa. His remains, along with those of the other fallen soldiers, were received by Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa at a ceremony at Swartkop Air Force Base, and handed over to the families for final rites.
Mokgosi expressed his condolences, saying the province and the nation were mourning the loss of Moreo. The family’s pain was shared by all.
“You will recall that when we took the decision to participate in the peacekeeping mission on the continent, South Africa volunteered to contribute to peacekeeping efforts,” said Mokgosi.
“Therefore, the loss of our soldiers is not just a family loss but a national loss. We said to them (the family) that they must accept that in this world we come and go. It’s just a matter of how we leave this world.”
Moreo’s uncle said there was a sense of relief after enduring frustration over the delays in receiving their loved one’s remains. The family had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to pay their respects and lay Moreo to rest with dignity.
Moreo’s funeral service will take place on Saturday (22/2) at the Civic Centre in Mahikeng.
