Metsimaholo commits to clean up Vaal Dam waterfront─── ZENANDE MPAME 13:09 Wed, 29 Jan 2025
The Metshimaholo municipality has plans in place to restore the Vaal Dam waterfront to its former glory and is working around the clock to address the urgent issues as quickly as possible.
The municipality sent a team to clean up the area after it was criticised by residents and the DA for its failure to maintain the cleanliness, infrastructure, and hygiene at the waterfront.
It’s a popular holiday destination with a variety of activities and accommodation options. The dam straddles the Free State and Gauteng border. The southern part, including the waterfront, falls in Mestimaholo, while the Vaal Marina is situated on the northern shore in Gauteng.
“We acknowledge the issues raised regarding the Vaal Dam waterfront, including the overflowing bins, damaged infrastructure, and unhygienic toilet facilities,” said municipal spokesperson Dr Gino Alberts.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience these challenges have caused to visitors and residents, as the waterfront is a cherished community asset and the key tourism destination in our municipality at Oranjeville.
“We are committed to address these matters promptly and strategically to ensure the waterfront reflects the high standards we aspire to maintain. Although we are unable to give an exact timeline for the completion of all interventions, we are making every effort to resolve the issues as soon as possible.”
The DA urged the municipality to implement weekly rubbish bin cleaning to prevent overflow and litter accumulation and demanded the existing ablution facilities be upgraded after having fallen into disrepair due to vandalism.

“The … unhygienic conditions at the waterfront cast a negative shadow over the tourism industry in Oranjeville,” said DA Cllr Louis van Heerden.
“The unkept environment may deter potential visitors, adversely impacting the town’s tourism revenue and overall reputation.”

The municipality said as part of its response plan, it will initiate infrastructure assessments to identify necessary repairs and prioritise work to restore and improve the facility’s condition.
Alberts apologised for the inconvenience caused, adding: “Your concerns are valuable to us, and we welcome further engagement as we plan to implement these improvements.”
