Free State police are still looking for the murderers of a Phuthaditjhaba councillor and his mom.

Moshe (40) and Dinah Lefuma (61) were killed at home in Phuthaditjhaba by two unidentified men on Saturday, 23 November.

No suspects have been arrested, said Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring. “The matter is still under investigation, and the case was moved to the provincial serious and violent crime, murder, and robbery unit in Bloemfontein after it was handed over for further investigation.”

Two men are said to have entered the family home while Dinah was home with her sons. They inquired about her oldest son, Moshe, who was sleeping in one of the bedrooms.

They went straight into his room after being asked why they were searching for him, and she followed them. At that point, the youngest son heard gunshots and fled the house.

A memorial service to commemorate the councillor’s life was held on 28 November when friends, family, and colleagues gathered at the Bluegumbosch Multipurpose Centre. Two days later, the mother and son were laid to rest at the same centre.

Meanwhile, in another shooting incident, a suspect (33) will appear in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court to apply for legal aid on Tuesday (28/1) on charges of murder and attempted murder.

“The suspect was arrested on Monday, 20 January, five months after the shooting of Neo Ntamane (27) who was killed and his mother, Ntsebeng Mokhethi-Ntamane (52), who is still recovering in hospital,” said Mophiring. “The suspect was arrested in Harrismith thanks to the tips and assistance by the public.”

On the day of the shooting in August, Ntamane and his girlfriend were driving their Renault Kwid from Intabazwe to their residence in the township of Tshiame B. On the way, they noticed a single-cab bakkie following them.

Upon their arrival, he opened the gate for his girlfriend so she could go into their room to turn on the light and he remained outside in the car, suddenly, she noticed the same bakkie driving past slowly.

‘The suspects fled with the deceased's phone and car’

The next moment she heard shots and saw Ntamane running for cover; however, he fell to the ground. She ran to the main house, where she found Ntamane’s mother, Ntsebeng, with a gunshot wound to the head bleeding heavily.

“The unknown suspects fled the crime scene with Ntamane’s Renault Kwid and his cell phone,” he said.
