A sergeant with the Bultfontein Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in the Free State is being honoured for her exceptional dedication and commitment.

She is being rewarded for investigating gender-based violence (GBV) cases and securing harsher sentences for sexual offenders.

“Sergeant Lerato Mokupi (36) has successfully secured 14 life sentences and an additional 30 years in prison for 9 sexual predators over the past ten years," said police spokesperson, Vincent Mukhathi.

The police are commemorating this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by highlighting the tireless efforts of its dedicated officers who work to incarcerate those committing acts of violence against the country’s women, children, and vulnerable groups.

“Her meticulous crime-solving skills, driven by a passion for justice and the need to protect GBV victims, prompted her to join the FCS Unit in 2013,” Mukhathi added.

Mokupi is regarded as a hero and a superwoman in Bultfontein. Her fierce determination and unwavering dedication drive her investigations into crimes against vulnerable groups, including women, children, and individuals with disabilities.

In one notable case, Mokupi conducted a detailed investigation and skilful analysis of evidence, leading her to link suspects to a victim’s cellphone. She built an airtight case against three men who brutally gang-raped a 53-year-old woman in Bultfontein on 30 January 2020. The assailants attacked and dragged the woman into nearby bushes, took turns assaulting her, and stole her cell phone before fleeing the scene.

 ‘Never give up!’

On 31 May 2024, the Odendaalsrus Regional Court delivered a landmark ruling, sentencing Khothatso Pudumo (29), Papi Nikane (28), and Lehlohonolo Mphirime (40) to two life terms each, along with an additional 5 years for charges of rape, murder, and robbery.

In 2016, Mokupi also achieved a significant victory by securing the sentencing of a 25-year-old man to two life terms and an additional 7 years in prison for rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

‘Committed her life to serving the community’

“ ‘Never give up!’ is my motto until the case is resolved. I am dedicated to my work, always serving with honesty and integrity," said Mokupi, who began her career with the SAPS in 2012 as a student constable before joining the FCS Unit to fulfil her dream of becoming a detective.

Mokupi has committed her life to serving the South African community, ensuring that justice is served for victims of gender-based violence.
