Free State police have made significant progress in resolving the brutal murder of an elderly woman in Bultfontein.

A suspect (20) was arrested on Saturday having been linked with the crime. The incident occurred on Saturday (4/1) at approximately 10:55 when the police were called to a gruesome murder scene in Phahameng, Bultfontein.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of Nonzenza Mutsi (87) in the outside toilet of her home. She had sustained multiple stab wounds to her back and neck and was declared dead at the scene.

Free State police spokesperson  Lorraine Earle announced the breakthrough on Friday (10/1) after the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit diligently followed leads that culminated in the arrest of the suspect. The suspect was apprehended at his girlfriend’s house in Naledi Section. “During the interrogation officers noticed bloodstains on one of his shoes. After extensive questioning and further investigation, he has been charged with murder," said Earle.

The community has been reeling from the tragic loss of Mme Mutsi in the Phahameng area. In response to the tragedy, Free State Social Development MEC Mathabo Leeto visited the grieving family to offer social support and comfort.

“It’s heartbreaking that the killing of our elderly people persists in our province,” said Leeto.“As a department, we respect the independence of older persons and do not advocate for their forced relocation to old age homes without their consent. However, the perpetrator who killed Mme Mutsi is believed to be a young person. We demand swift action from the police to apprehend this criminal and bring them to justice.”

Leeto stressed the importance of community collaboration in addressing violence, ensuring the province’s elderly, women, and children are safe in their homes and neighbourhoods. Her sentiments were echoed by Provincial Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, who praised the partnership between the community and law enforcement.

“The dedication of the community and police in fighting crime is evident in this case. Together, we are making our neighbourhoods safer.”
