The department of water and sanitation has pledged to foster unity in Hartbeespoort Dam following escalating racial tension.

The alleged intentional damage to property is said to fuel the racial divide, with reports of Afrikaans-speaking people wanting to drive black business owners and residents out of the area.

However, Pieter Rautenbach, former mayor and long-time resident, refuted the claims, saying criminals in the area were to blame for cutting fences and erecting illegal structures. Related to some of the fires that were reported, he said initial investigations pointed to electrical issues rather than arson.

The importance of community involvement in resolving racial tension was highlighted by North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi at the recent launch of a forum for stakeholders in Hartbeespoort. He said economic opportunities in the area stand central to the current discord, with differing perspectives between those seeking change and those wanting to preserve the status quo.

“Racial and tribal issues are global challenges that communities worldwide continue to grapple with. There are elements of racism here in Hartbeespoort, despite progress made with integration. Therefore, we have agreed to work collectively within these structures to address the key issues,” said deputy minister of water and sanitation, David Mahlobo.

Mahlobo further highlighted that equitable access to economic opportunities linked to the Hartbeespoort Dam is being prioritised. While provincial and local entities are coordinating efforts to secure access to land for residents, the youth, people with disabilities, and traditional communities.
