A foreign national (41) will appear in the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court soon for the possession of illicit cigarettes.

Parkweg's response team reacted to information on Friday (25/10) about a warehouse used to store illicit cigarettes.

Upon arrival at the warehouse in the Bloemfontein CBD, members searched the warehouse and found about 97 boxes of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R1.9 million.

‘This type of illegal activity is negatively affecting our economy’

“A suspect is to appear in court soon after he was found with illicit cigarettes in the Bloemfontein CBD,” said Free State police spokesperson, Mahlomola Kareli. “The foreigner (41) was arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes.”

“This type of illegal activity is negatively affecting our economy; hence, we would like to applaud the vigilance of our members in responding to illegal activities of this nature,” said provincial commissioner Baile Motswenyane.

Meanwhile, in the Johannesburg CBD, police seized counterfeit items valued at over R3 million on Saturday (26/10). Two suspects, identified as illegal foreign nationals, were also arrested during the operation.

The operation which was led by SAPS and various stakeholders was executed on Friday (25/10), under a search and seizure warrant that targeted shopping malls in the Johannesburg CBD.

More than 6,000 counterfeit items were confiscated, including pharmaceuticals, clothing, watches, bags, cosmetics, and perfumes.

“The SAPS, along with its partners, is committed to eradicating the illegal trade of counterfeit goods to safeguard consumers, legitimate businesses, and the economy of this country,” said Gauteng police spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk.

“The two suspects were arrested and will appear in court soon.”
