A suspect charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder remains in custody and is set to appear in court for legal representation and a bail application on Tuesday (29/10) at the Orkney Magistrates’ Court.

The successful investigation by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit led to the suspect's arrest on Friday (18/10) in connection with these charges.

“According to reports, two men arrived at a tavern in Kanana Old Location, near Orkney, on Friday, 4 October 2024, and opened fire, resulting in the death of one man. Additionally, five individuals – a woman and four men – sustained gunshot wounds.

“The suspects allegedly fled the scene, while the injured were taken to a clinic and later transferred to Tshepong Hospital for medical attention. The police were called to the scene, and a case of murder along with five counts of attempted murder was registered,” stated Brig. Sabata Mokgwabone.

“The cases were assigned to the Anti-Gang Unit for investigation, which led to the identification of the deceased as Mokhele Sephapho (46) from Lesotho. The two gunmen were also identified as Lesotho nationals.

“One of the suspects was apprehended on Friday, October 18, in Viljoenskroon, Free State, and appeared in the local Magistrates’ Court for violating the Immigration Act of 2002. Witnesses positively identified the suspect, who has since been charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder.

“Thabo Justinus Letsie (36) appeared in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (22/10) and has since remained in custody.”

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the provincial police commissioner, praised the investigation team for their dedicated efforts that led to the arrest.
