Suspects arrested in connection with a corruption case involving the fraudulent issuance of driver’s licenses are scheduled to appear in the Petrusburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday (28/10).

An investigation launched in 2023 targeted a syndicate operating within the licensing sector in the Free State and Northern Cape. The Free State police have thus concluded their investigation into the corruption related to the illegal issuance of driver’s licenses.

“Diligent and thorough investigative efforts have led to the identification and arrest of several key suspects. These individuals are believed to have orchestrated a scheme that allowed unqualified individuals to illegally obtain their driver’s licenses,” said Brig. Motantsi Makhele.

“The takedown operation, conducted by the Free State Organised Crime Unit, with assistance from Crime Intelligence, successfully apprehended five suspects who were allegedly involved in this criminal activity. The suspects are currently facing charges related to corruption, fraud, and other associated offences.”

Two civilian suspects, aged 52 and 62, were arrested in Petrusburg, while three employees of the Traffic Department, aged between 30 and 50, were apprehended in Kimberley.

Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane emphasised the Free State police’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the licensing system, stating they will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who undermine it are brought to justice. The police thanked the community for their support during the investigation and encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.

Meanwhile, Thabo Mothibi, a member of the communications unit at the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, said that the motor registration centre will be closed today (25/10) and will be operational again on Monday (28/10). He said the necessary arrangements are being made to replace the arrested staff members.
