“As police, we are appealing for calm, tolerance, and cooperation from all motorists using our main roads, including the R30, N1, N8, N3, and rural roads.”

With major events like Lemo Fest and the CUFA Fest having just kicked off in Bloemfontein, the Free State police have reassured the public safety measures are in place to ensure a secure environment for attendees.

Police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli announced Operation Safer Festive Season, a multidisciplinary initiative, will be rolled out to maintain order and prevent crime during the festivities.

“As police, we are appealing for calm, tolerance, and cooperation from all motorists using our main roads, including the R30, N1, N8, N3, and rural roads. We also advise attendees to familiarise themselves with the rules of each event to avoid unnecessary delays and confrontations,” said Kareli.

He urged the public to stay vigilant and be mindful of several crime risks, especially during the bustling festive season:

  • Drinking and driving: Anyone caught driving under the influence will face strict legal consequences
  • Car hijackings: Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Avoid using your phone while driving.
  • Theft from and of vehicles: Ensure your vehicle is properly locked before leaving it, and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight to deter theft.
  • Robberies and kidnappings: Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas at night, and never accept lifts from strangers. Plan your transport arrangements after attending events.
  • Rape: No one has the right to force you into any sexual act or touch you without consent. Everyone has the right to say no.
  • ATM safety: Never allow strangers to assist you at an ATM, and always ensure your card and PIN are secure.

Attendees are also encouraged to plan their routes carefully to avoid stopping and asking for directions, which could expose them to scammers. Kareli emphasised the Bloemfontein police and external stakeholders will conduct routine crime prevention measures throughout the events.
