“Many took to social media to criticise the state of road infrastructure in the province, referring to some of the roads as ‘killer roads’ and urging the provincial government to prioritise road safety improvements.”

The North West Agriculture and Rural Development MEC and his protectors are recuperating following a serious car accident.

MEC Madoda Sambatha and his protectors were traveling from Rustenburg to Klerksdorp on official duty when the accident occurred near Derby in the Kgetleng Municipality on Monday (15/7) evening.

North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi confirmed that all those involved survived and have been admitted to a hospital in Klerksdorp. Mokgosi wished Sambatha and his protectors a speedy recovery.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Sambatha shared his preference for public healthcare, revealing that he insisted on being treated at Tshepong Public Hospital despite his bodyguards’ suggestion to go to a private hospital.

Sambatha humorously mentioned that he felt confident about the hospital’s equipment, which he helped to acquire during his tenure as Health MEC.

While recovery messages continue to pour in for Sambatha, many took to social media to criticise the state of road infrastructure in the province, referring to some of the roads as “killer roads”, and urging the provincial government to prioritise road safety improvements.

The accident has sparked renewed calls for attention to road safety in the province.

Last year, Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe and his bodyguard warrant officer Vuyo Mdi lost their lives when their vehicle collided with three cows on the N1 outside Winburg.
