More police have been deployed to Popo Molefe informal settlement in Boitekong outside Rustenburg in North West after the weekend mass shooting incident that left nine people dead.

This was confirmed by North West for Community Safety and Transport Management Sello Lehari, citing that the team will be in the area until the end of December. It may be extended if necessary. 

I's alleged that Sotho-speaking people shot and killed eight people instantly. Another one died upon arrival in the hospital. The group is said to have been drinking liquor in the yard of one of the injured people.

Lehari said the situation is calm and order has been restored. He called on residents to assist the police with any valuable information that may assist in this case.

Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said the motive is yet to be determined and no one has been arrested.

Lehari said a dedicated team of investigators established by provincial commissioner Sello Kwena, has amongst them a well-experienced investigating officer in the province.

Information was divulged during a stakeholders' briefing upon Lehari's visit and it is alleged that in September, about 40 shacks belonging to Sotho nationals were allegedly burned by the Xhosa speaking group.

Eight people were reported injured including a 9-year-old toddler.
