Eleven suspects have appeared in the Excelsior Magistrate's Court on charges of public violence after they took part in an illegal protest.
“They will be kept in custody until their next court appearance on Monday (28/8) for a formal bail application,” said Free State police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring.
50 people barricaded the road with stones and burning tyres on Wednesday (16/8) at the Mahlatswetsa township in Excelsior. Police were called at 06:50 and they handled the situation. Selosesha and Ficksburg Public Order Police Units were called in to assist with crowd control.
Stones obstructed the streets and trash was scattered all over. Neither individuals nor property were harmed during the demonstration. At this point, it is unknown why this protest took place.
