The DA speaker of the troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality will on Friday 28 July 2023 face a tabled motion of no confidence.

Another opposition party, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) brought the motion against Maryke Davies. ATM is an alliance of the ruling party in the council. It's understood that the motion relates to a certain meeting and that the contents of that meeting is sub judice.

DA Caucus Leader Johan Pretorius tells OFM News they will reject this motion. He says it will be illegal to discuss it in council. OFM News previously reported that the metro is holding a much-anticipated council meeting.

Mangaung council set to vote for new executive mayor

On two previous occasions this month, the council failed to meet the quorum after opposition party members boycotted the sitting.

During Friday's sitting, parties are set to vote for a permanent executive mayor, deputy mayor, and council whip.

Pretorius said the DA will also put forward its candidate for all available positions in this vote.  He said the hope is that councillors will vote for the DA candidates. The council has been plunged into constant disruption with the ANC infighting taking over the politics of the council.

In March this year, the ANC fired eight members for allegedly voting with opposition parties to elect a DA speaker.

Whilst the ANC infighting continued unabated later on in April, ANC councillors voted with opposition parties again to vote in an opposition party leader Papi Mokoena as the Executive Mayor but his victory was shortlived after the High Court Judge Sharon Chisiwe gave an order which interdicted Mokoena from executing his duties. However, it remains to be seen if the ANC, with 51 members and the support of three more parties, will sing the same tune and carry out the mandate of the ruling party.

On 19 July 2023, the ANC retained all wards in Mangaung in the by-elections contested in wards 50, 49, 29, and 7.
