Brebner High School, based in Bloemfontein, Free State, is set to host 48 teams for their annual U/15 and U/17 soccer tournament this weekend.

The tournament, which will take place from Saturday (24/06) to Monday (26/06), will showcase the incredible talent and competitive spirit of young soccer players, according to Lee Bateman, Sports Co-ordinator of Brebner High School.

He explained that on the third and final day of the tournament, awards will be presented to outstanding players, teams and coaches, recognising their exceptional performances and sportsmanship. The 2022 tournament led to additional teams requesting to participate, as they had 40 teams.

“Last year, the event added evening matches, with a select number of the group and knockout round games taking place on the soccer fields of the University of the Free State. The goal was to get young players used to playing in the evening, much like professional football players do,” he explained in a media statement. This year, the trend of evening matches will continue. In addition, this year's competition will play the majority of its games on the home fields of the host during the day. Some of the games, though, will be played on the soccer fields of Christian Brothers College (CBC) in order to accommodate more games.

"We are excited to host this prestigious tournament and provide a platform for young soccer players to showcase their abilities. For a number of them, it’ll be their first time competing in a national tournament and for us, it’ll be the first time hosting such a large number of teams,” Bateman added.

“The tournament will feature state-of-the-art facilities, expert referees, and a vibrant atmosphere that will create an unforgettable experience for players and spectators alike.

“Although an open event, strict admission regulations and security will be maintained by the organising committee.”
