The visibility of traffic officers is expected to increase on various roads in North West following the recruitment of new officers.
The province officially welcomed 51 new traffic officers who recently graduated from college.
The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, said in his speech at the Mmabatho Stadium in Mahikeng his department did not only make efforts to fight unemployment but also made sure that they address issues of gender equality when they recruited new traffic officers.
“We have also identified young men and women whom we sent to college to be trained as traffic officers. Of the 53 learners sent to college, 51 have successfully completed the course, 32 are women and 21 are men. This was to help jobless young people and address the gender imbalance at the workplace.”
The department also handed over new vehicles to enhance the work of traffic officers. Lehari welcomed the addition of new traffic officers and said he is hopeful that they will be effective in ensuring that the province reduces fatalities on the roads.
