The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi says vacant posts that have not been permanently filled is one of the major challenges that has regressed her department.

Motsumi said this during a Districts Extended Management Meeting held at Ferdinand Postma Secondary School in Potchefstroom on Friday 12 May, where she emphasised the need to do away with too many acting positions existing in her department.

“There are many acting positions in this department and it is costing the department so dearly. Let’s do away with these acting posts. Let’s check how best we can close those posts because they are creating unnecessary problems for us as a Department of Education. We failed to spend R400 000 000, specifically for compensation of employees but we are having people who are acting. It can’t be correct to place someone in an acting position for close to a year,” she said.

Motsumi further stated that her department has to start with the process of appointing people who have been acting in vacant positions from 1 June 2023.

“We have the power to change the current status quo, we can’t sit back and allow mediocrity in the department,” she added.
