The goal of the Kimberley Diamond Cup grand slam is to grow the skateboarding scene across the country.

Skateboarders are invited to take part in the Kimberley Diamond Cup Grand Slam, which will take place in Kimberley on Saturday (1/2) at the Skate Plaza to show off their skills and stand a chance to win R100,000.

The Kimberley Diamond Cup world skateboarding championships first took place in 2013 and the event has been held in the Northern Cape capital since then.

“The Kimberley Diamond Cup grand slam is an exciting event that brings together some great skaters, and even amateur skateboarders,” said Northern Cape Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Tourism spokesperson Kgalalelo Matsime.

“The event forms part of a series of skateboarding tournaments called grand slams. This event isn’t just about competition but also about bringing the community together.”

When they attended the Johannesburg grand slam the week before, people came out in numbers to support the local skaters. “There was a beautiful sense of social cohesion because it brought people from different backgrounds together.”

The grand slam has six preliminary events leading up to the grand finale that will be held in Kimberley on Saturday, 15 March.

On Saturday it will be in Kimberley, Saturday, 8 February, in Bloemfontein, Saturday, 15 February, in Durban, Saturday, 1 March, in Johannesburg, and the grand finale on Saturday, 15 March, in Kimberley.

“I would like to call on all skateboarders in and around Kimberley to participate in the grand slam tomorrow, you have absolutely nothing to lose and lots of fun to gain and money that you could win,” said Matsime

“We’d love to see everyone interested in skateboarding at the Skate Plaza, as this is your chance to show off your skills and to meet other skaters.”

Northern Cape Economic Development and Tourism MEC Venus Blennies-Magage said: “This prestigious event has not only solidified its position as a world-class skateboarding championship but also demonstrated its value as a catalyst for economic growth, community upliftment, and global recognition of our province.”
