An ANC councillor (40) at the Matlosana Local Municipality in North West has been arrested for sexual misconduct.

The Klerksdorp-based ward 25 councillor was arrested in connection with two counts of statutory rape over the weekend.

The provincial police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone revealed that in a crimen injuria case which was registered on Friday afternoon 5 May 2023, the suspect had allegedly shared a nude picture of his private parts with the complainant. He added that a second and separate case, accusing the same suspect of two counts of statutory rape, was laid on Saturday evening 6 May 2023 by the parents of two boys, both aged 15. This after a recorded video of a man having sexual intercourse with a boy went viral on social media platforms, including WhatsApp.

“Investigations into the incidents continue. Members of the community and civil society organisations are requested to exercise patience and allow the police to conduct investigations. In the meantime, we are not aware of allegations that the police refused to assist the complainant in the crimen injuria case. Thus, we request those who are making allegations to lodge a formal complaint for investigation,” he said.

Mokgwabone requested the public to refrain from recirculating the video.

Meanwhile, the suspect was suspended by the ANC in the province.  The party’s provincial secretary, Louis Diremelo, stated they were shocked by the video circulating on social media platforms, showing one of their public representatives engaged in a sexual act.

“Rising from this despicable behaviour, the ANC has suspended the membership of Cde. Tebogo Sepale with immediate effect. This suspension will hold until the outcomes of the disciplinary process. He is suspended in terms of Rule 25.17.4 of the Constitution of the African National Congress.”

“This type of behaviour goes against our values and building a cohesive society in which all people are treated with respect and dignity. We will therefore not stand idle when such tendencies rear their ugly face. We will act immediately and swiftly to root out such behaviour,” said Diremelo.

He further conveyed sympathies to all the victims and called on others who have not come forward, to do so.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
