North West municipality gets split electricity meters─── 10:20 Sat, 01 Apr 2023
Electricity split meters have been installed in Letlhabile, North West. This forms part of Operation Patela.
The first installation was done at the house of Madibeng mayor Douglas Maimane, followed by his neighbour and MMC Feni Motepe in ward 9.
Spokesperson Tumelo Tshabala says this will bring an end to the practice of by-passing of electricity meter boxes.
Of the 12 000 households in the area, only about 2 000 are confirmed regular buyers of electricity.
"Data relating to purchasing of electricity in Letlhabile for the past three months, has revealed that more than 10 000 are presumed to have by-passed the system”.
Mayor Maimane says the process will also create jobs for locals, as they will be hired to speed up the project.
Tshabalala said the split meters project will help the municipality cover its Eskom debt, generate revenue and ensure services are delivered.
