SAPS’ Thabo Litabe said this following an incident where two officers helped a mother deliver her baby at the Kathu Community Service Centre on Monday 27 March 2023.

According to Litabe, the shift commander, Warrant Officer Mmota Rasekoai, was taken aback when a woman, who was experiencing labour pains, arrived at the station needing assistance.

Despite the unanticipated occurrence, two constables took charge and ensured that the woman received the care and attention she needed. Thanks to the quick response of Constable Violet Mothole and Nomthandazo Bangiso, the mother gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Tshepiso.

The officers were not alone in their efforts to help the new mother and baby, nurse Pitso and firefighters from the Gamagara Municipality also arrived on the scene to provide post-natal care. The mother and her baby were transported to the Kuruman Hospital for further medical treatment soon after.

Kathu Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Modise, expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the members and other roleplayers who assisted with the birth of baby Tshepiso, who is said to be doing well, said Litabe.

Meanwhile, the incident garnered mixed reactions online. Facebook users praised the police whilst noting the distrust citizens have in public health services.
