'We have solution for Maluti-a-Phofung's water crisis,' says DA─── ZENANDE MPAME 20:44 Tue, 28 Mar 2023
The Democratic Alliance in the Maluti-a-Phofung (MaP) municipality says it has taken steps to find a solution for the water woes of residents.
For months, there has been no water supply in a number of communities, which has been made worse by Eskom's implementation of higher levels of load-shedding.
According to DA councillor Eleanor Quinta, the party has issued a letter to MaP Water's board of directors to devise cost figures to install dedicated power lines to all of the major water treatment plants.
"The DA came up with a solution to isolate the four major water treatment plants. The isolation can be a dedicated power line to the plants or lower load-shedding schedules for areas in which the plants are situated. We have proactively kept in touch with Eskom and in response, Eskom suggested that the municipality bring the request up for discussion and evaluation," says Quinta.
She says several requests were sent to the Municipal Manager (MM) but to date he has not made himself available to meet with the DA.
Recently, a new acting MM, Soso Sepheka, has been appointed, and the provision of electricity and water are top priorities on her list.
"The DA will present a motion at the special council meeting to request the mayor to negotiate with Eskom to lessen the impact of load-shedding on Maluti-a-Phofung's water supply," says Quinta.
