A North West cash-heist suspect is set to remain in police custody after he appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on 9 January 2023.

The 29-year-old Khumo Maleshane was arrested on 5 January 2023, just mere hours following a cash-in-transit robbery that took place about 5km from Wolmaransstad that morning.

According to North West Police's communication officer, Tlangelani Rikhotso, the accused was arrested in Potchefstroom around 15:00 after he was found in a vehicle that allegedly fitted the description of one of the vehicles at the crime scene. He was also reportedly found in possession of a bag with over R60 000 in cash.

OFM News previously reported that a group of suspects, travelling in four vehicles, rammed into a cash van that was travelling towards Wolmaransstad from Klerksdorp on 5 January 2023 at about 07:00. The cash van then came to a standstill.

The suspects allegedly bombed the cash van, took an undisclosed amount of cash, and fled. Police reports revealed that suspects fled in the direction of Wolmaransstad with three vehicles, which include a gold-coloured vehicle and two VW Polos, whilst two injured guards were transported to a local hospital.

Rikhotso says both the vehicle and the money were seized for further investigations following the arrest of Maleshane. The suspect is facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and contravention of the Explosives Act. The case against the 29-year-old has been postponed to 13 January 2023. Rihotso adds that more arrests cannot be ruled out as investigations continue.
